To add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). To extract VAT from a gross price: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).
Rates are entered by you and vary by jurisdiction — not tax advice. Check your local regulations.
Value-added tax rates differ by country and product category, so this calculator asks for your rate instead of guessing it. Choose whether to add VAT to a net amount or extract VAT from a gross, tax-inclusive amount.
Formula & methodology
Adding: gross = net × (1 + v). Extracting is the reverse — a common mistake is subtracting the percentage directly, which over-removes tax: net = gross ÷ (1 + v), and VAT = gross − net.
Worked examples
Add 5% to 100 → gross 105, VAT 5
Extract 5% from 105 → net 100, VAT 5
Extract 15% from 230 → net 200, VAT 30 (not 230 × 15% = 34.50 — that is the classic error)
Limits
Rates, exemptions, and rounding rules are set by each jurisdiction — check your local regulations. This tool is not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not just take 15% of the gross price to find the VAT?
Because the gross already contains the tax. 230 with 15% VAT contains 30 of tax (230 ÷ 1.15 = 200 net), not 34.50.
Which VAT rate should I enter?
The rate that legally applies to your product and country — this tool deliberately ships no country table because rates and exemptions change.
