Formulas & methodology

All four use a base weight at 152.4 cm (5 ft) plus a per-inch increment above it (1 in = 2.54 cm):

  • Devine (1974): men 50 kg + 2.3/in · women 45.5 kg + 2.3/in
  • Robinson (1983): men 52 + 1.9 · women 49 + 1.7
  • Miller (1983): men 56.2 + 1.41 · women 53.1 + 1.36
  • Hamwi (1964): men 48 + 2.7 · women 45.5 + 2.2

  • Man, 175 cm → Devine 70.46 kg, Robinson 68.91, Miller 68.75, Hamwi 72.02.

Limits

These equations were derived for adults at least 152.4 cm (5 ft) tall — the calculator refuses shorter heights instead of extrapolating. They ignore body composition entirely: a muscular athlete can be "over" every estimate while carrying little fat. Use them as a historical clinical reference range, alongside BMI and body-fat measurements, never as a target on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the four formulas disagree?

Each was fitted by different clinicians in different decades for drug-dosing tables, not health targets. The disagreement is the honest finding: "ideal weight" is a range, roughly the span between the lowest and highest of the four.

Which formula should I use?

Clinical references most often cite Devine for dosing. For a personal reference, read the spread across all four together with BMI and body-fat — no single equation deserves the final word.
